Skincare is very important, and it isn’t something just for people who are getting old! We are all in our 30’s, but we have all started our skincare routines since we were young, maybe except Molly. Prevention early on is always better than regretting when it is too late. Cosmetic surgeries can only fix so much before you turn into a walking plastic looking doll.
Maybe because Pinky Espresso is 60% Asian, we truly believe in the importance of skincare, which has been instilled in us since we were kids by our mothers. In this post we share with you our skincare routines that we swear by. Some of us like to mix it up, while some of us like to stick to one skincare brand. We all have different skin types, hopefully one of our routines or products suit your needs as well!
Ever since I was little, I always watched my mom do her skincare routine every morning and every night. I couldn’t wait until I was old enough to have a skincare routine. For my mom, it was all about prevention. Moisturizers and sunblock were the most basic and essential aspects of her skincare routine. According to my mom, it is easier and cheaper to prevent than have to spend so much money on getting rid of all the unwanted signs of aging.
Fast forward to today, I am proud to say I follow my mom’s skincare regimen since I was in college, and I can’t wait to pass it down to my own daughter when it is time.
My skincare regimen is not complicated but it does take me all day to do it. I’m not vain. I just believe that good skin comes not only from facial creams, but starts from a healthy diet, so I do a combination of both preventive and restorative.
First step for me is to try to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. This is very hard to do especially when you are a working mother with 2 kids. Most of the time, I’m lucky if I get 6 hours, but when I get the chance, I love to take a nap to try to catch up on my sleep. Sleep is very rejuvenating for your skin and I always notice how much fresher and brighter my skin complexion feels.
Second step for me is to ensure I drink at least four 16.9 oz water bottles in 1 day. Like 99.9% of you out there, we drink water from water bottles so this should be really easy for you to track. Four bottles equates to the recommended 8 glasses of water you are supposed to drink to keep you hydrated. When your body is hydrated, your skin is hydrated.
1. Lipid Free Cleanser | 2. Lancome Bi-Facil Double Action Eye Make-up Remover | 3. Ponds Cold Cream Cleanser
I only wash my face once a day – at night before going to bed. I cannot wash my face more than once a day, otherwise it gets too dry. This was never a problem until I moved to Chicago and started experiencing harsh winters. So every morning I do a quick splash of water on my face, then I pat it softly with a clean dry towel. Never rub your face – always pat dry softly – you never want to be rough on the skin on your face, words of wisdom from my mother. I make sure to wash my face at night even if I didn’t put any make up on. Washing your face before going to bed is key to having good skin. I use Lipid free cleanser because it is non-irritating and non-alkaline soap substitute that helps retain moisture.
I use both the Lancome and Pond’s to take my make up off. For general, everyday make up, I just use Pond’s. I know, it’s very old school and something my mother handed down to me. But for tough, waterproof mascara and eyeliners, Lancome is the best. I also use it to remove my false eyelashes because it is oil-based and makes it very easy.
4. Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream | 5. Retrinex (Retinoic Acid) Anti-Wrinkle Cream
After the quick splash of water, I put moisturizer on my face. Just in the last couple of years, my skin has become sensitive that I experienced some allergic reactions with brands I’ve always used, like Kiehl’s. I had to see a dermatologist and she recommended using Vanicream as my daily moisturizer both for day and night time. Vanicream is a very strong moisturizer for those with extremely sensitive skin conditions. It goes on non-greasy and is free of most common irritants; dye free, perfume/fragrance free, lanolin free, paraben free, formaldehyde free and non-comedogenic. My skin is normal that borders on the dry side. In the winter months, it gets a lot drier so I need a strong moisturizer. During the hot and humid Chicago summer months, you can buy the light version of so it doesn’t feel too heavy. You can buy both at Target and it lasts me a long time.
After cleaning my face completely, I put my anti-wrinkle cream which is a Retrinex cream that I get from my dermatologist. It boasts the highest level of retinoic acid in an anti-wrinkle cream. The active ingredient is Retin-A, which all anti-wrinkle creams in the market claim to have. Retinoic acid is what helps prevent and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
6. Lancome Bienfait UVF SPF 50+ Super Fluid Facial Sunscreen | 7. Lancome Teinte Beauty Balm SPF 30
After I let the moisturizer absorb in my skin for a little bit, I either put on the Lancome facial sunscreen or BB cream. On the weekends, I just put my sunscreen on but during the week, I also put the BB cream on. The BB cream is a tinted moisturizer and has sunblock as well.
8. Transdermal Vitamin-C Gel
My regimen is not complete without my vitamin C. I get mine from my dermatologist, but there are many products out there in the market now with vitamin C. Most people don’t know this, but vitamin C is very important for your skins texture and elasticity as you grow older. Unfortunately, your skin is the last to absorb vitamin C in your body, that’s why you need to add it to your regimen.
Unlike my fellow Pinky Espresso girls, the “Asian Sensations” as I lovingly call them, skincare was not drilled into my head as a young child. My mom uses, gasp… bar soap to wash her face, and I don’t think I have ever seen her moisturize. Lucky for her she was blessed with beautiful Mediterranean skin that makes her looks years younger than her age. With me though as I have been getting older, I decided I’m not going to take a chance that I am as lucky as her, and have developed a little routine. As you can see from my other posts I love spending my money on bags and shoes, so my skincare routine I keep pretty affordable. I luckily found Kiehl’s over 10 years ago and have been using all their products ever since. Their products are relatively inexpensive and I think the quality is great! Now that I think about it this may be the only brand I am loyal to!
1. Kiehl’s Rare Earth Deep Pore Daily Cleanser | 2. Kiehl’s Ultra Face Cleanser
I love the Deep Pore Cleanser because it cleanses and gently exfoliates so it leaves my pores clean and unclogged, and my skin feeling super smooth to start the day. As for night time, the Ultra Face Cleanser is a makeup lovers dream. It takes the day’s makeup off super easily while still being gentle on the skin. I don’t even need eye makeup remover!
3. Kiehl’s Powerful Strength Line Reducing Concentrate | 4. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer | 5. Kiehl’s Rosa Arctica
The Line Reducing Concentrate is the most recent addition to my skincare routine, and to be honest it’s the one I can almost feel working immediately after I apply it. It contains pure vitamin C so it really fights against fine lines and wrinkles, and also protects the skin against free-radicals. Afterwards I apply the Ultra Facial Moisturizer. This was my first ever daily moisturizer and I still love it. It’s super light weight but still really keeps my face feeling super moisturized, even in the harsh east coast winters! I plop it on right over the serum. As for the Rose Artica, this moisturizer is super thick and creamy so I love wearing it at night to really have the time to work its magic.
6. Kiehl’s Powerful Wrinkle Reducing Eye Cream
After turning 30 a few… ok more than a few… years ago I knew it was time to add an eye moisturizer to my routine, so I settled on this one. Just like my moisturizer it’s super lightweight but really does the trick of keeping the dreaded crows feet at bay.
7. Kiehls Rare Earth Pore Cleansing Mask
This mask is perfect to deeply clean my face after a long week of makeup and the smog of the city.
According to my mom, she had a skincare routine set in place for me since I was an infant. She always gives me such a hard time when I lay out in the sun for that golden delicious tan, as she believes I completely jeopardized all her years of hard work. Needless to say, like all Asians, the importance of skincare has been engraved into my brain ever since I was little.
By no means am I one of those who is into all the whitening products, and takes skincare so seriously that it becomes my life. My skincare routine is relatively simple compare to most Asian women. Wash, tone, and moisturize. Anything more than that I get super confused. I do use separate products for day and night though. The day set is more water based, whereas the night set is more intense as that is when your skin goes into repair mode.
1. Murad Renewing Cleansing Cream | 2. Murad Clarifying Cleanser
First step of course is to clean your face. I feel silly sometimes doing it in the morning, but my skin is so oily when I wake up, I like to start the day with a clean slate. Susan introduced me to Murad cleansers, and I have been using them ever since. The Murad Renewing Cleansing Cream leaves my skin supple and soft, which provides a good foundation for makeup. At night, I use the Clarifying Cleanser, after taking off my makeup with NARS Gentle Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover and NARS Makeup Remover Water. The Clarifying Cleanser helps reduce blemishes and breakouts. It is so important to clean your face at night before going to bed, even if you didn’t have any makeup on. No matter how tired or drunk I am, I always wash my face before going to bed.
3. SK-II Facial Treatment Essence
In Asia, it is known as “miracle water”. The main ingredient is Pitera, which is a “naturally derived liquid from sake fermentation process.” The brand started off as a sake brewery, until scientists noticed the elderly workers all have wrinkled face, but soft and youthful looking hands. I use this day and night after washing my face. It smells a little funky, but it is so nourishing, and I’ve noticed a much more balanced skin tone since using it.
4. Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture for eyes | 5. Fresh Black Tea Age-Delay Eye Concentrate
Eye care is very important to me, and I’ve been using eye cream since I was in my 20’s. I have dark circles, so I always try to find products that help improve them. For my morning routine, I use the Murad eye cream, and I love how it is super light but very hydrating, which is perfect for the day. My night eye cream is a bit creamier, and I’ve noticed a reduction in puffiness ever since I started using the Fresh eye cream, plus I love the smell of it. Very zen… perfect for night time.
6. Philosophy Hope in a Jar | 7. SK-II Essential Power Moisturizing Cream
I’ve been using Philosophy’s Hope in a Jar for a really long time, and I love how it is so light-weight but keeps my skin moisturized all day long. I hate the feeling of heavy cream on my face, and Hope in a Jar fits the bill! Plus I love how it comes in a giant 4oz size, so I don’t need to keep replenishing. At night I use the SK-II Essential Power, which is super expensive, and I still hate myself for thinking, “let’s give it a try.” My skin was hooked since day one! Like the Treatment Essence, Pitera is the main ingredient, and this cream leaves my skin super moisturized, soft, and supple. It is just so lavishing, and puts my skin in a good place for a night of beauty rest.
8. Dr. Wu Hydrating System Microinject Hydrating Mask with Hyaluronic Acid
Once in a while, when my skin needs some deep hydration and moisture, I whip out the face mask. This tends to be after a long haul flight, as the airplane does a great job at sucking every water droplet out of my skin. A friend of mine gave me a pack she got from Taiwan by Dr. Wu, and said it was the best face mask she has ever used. She has pretty amazing skin so of course I tried it right away. My reaction after the first use? WOW! I didn’t even know my skin could be this hydrated, and it almost feels like skin of a baby when you take the mask off. It is amazing.
My skincare routine – Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate! I consider my skin to be dry so hydration is important to me. I tend not to wear too much make-up because I want to achieve a natural glow from healthy skin. Washing my face is a priority regardless of how exhausted I am because I love the feel and look of a fresh face. It also helps me sleep better. Below is my skincare routine to keep my face feeling fresh and hydrated.
*Susan used to work at Murad, thus her all-Murad skincare regimen. The photo above is Susan who was featured on Sephora’s Murad product board!
1. Murad Clarifying Cleanser | 2. Murad AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser
When I was in high school I had bad Acne specifically around my T-Zone. I was using the 3-Step Acne skincare solution from Proactiv but was never too fond of it due to the strong scent. Then I discovered Murad and immediately fell in love with it. My face has cleared up since but I have never stopped using the Clarifying Cleanser because the scent is subtle and I love it! I use this cleanser every day and night. Additionally, once a week, I exfoliate my face with the AHA/BHA cleanser. I love the tiny jojoba beads scrubbing gently against my face for an intense deep cleaning to leave my skin feeling smoother.
3. Murad Clarifying Toner | 4. Murad Hydrating Toner
I love using the Clarifying toner after I wash my face in the morning because it leaves me feeling cool and fresh, giving my face a slight tingle. This is perfect for me since I still tend to break out every now and then. At night, after washing my face, I use the Hydrating toner before I sleep. This is my all-time favorite toner! Multi-purpose and great to take along as you travel. If you ever want a pick-me-up at the airport, just spray this in the air and let the mist fall gently on your face. The scent is just perfect!!! I also keep this near my desk at work and whenever I apply lotion to my hands, I also spray this over every now and then to keep my hands hydrated.
5. Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture for Eyes
Eye cream is a must for me every day and night. I’m starting to see fine lines as I age so I definitely want this process to SLOW down, reducing the appearance. Murad’s eye cream is perfect for me because not only does it retain optimal moisture it is also not too thick! A little goes a long way. I simply just pat beneath my eyes and up into my brow bone area.
6. Murad Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisture
A glowly, dewy skin starts with hydration! I use Murad’s Hydro-Dynamic Ultimate Moisturizer every single day as it locks in moisture for 24 hours! Similar to the eye cream it also has a very lightweight texture. My skin loves it!
7. Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30 PA+++
Flawless and Fabulous in just one step? I’m sold! I absolutely LOVE this product! I apply a thin layer of this over my moisturizer and sometimes just walk out the door; but the beauty of this is that it also acts like a primer as well so when you put makeup on top, your face just looks flawless! I’ve recommended this product to many girls and they all love it!!! This product ‘blurs’ any imperfections you have on your face and at the same time protecting it, since it has SPF. This product should be incorporated into any regimen; it simply makes you look extra fabulous!
