Holiday time is quickly approaching. The year pretty much flew by, we cannot believe it is already November, and Thanksgiving is only 2 weeks away! Holiday time means parties, gatherings, potlucks, and lots of food. We are always scratching our heads on what to bring to a potluck, as we are too lazy to do any elaborate home cooking, and always end up bringing pre-made Trader Joe’s goodies, together with our guilt. That is until we encountered “The Crack”.
No, we are not referring to the white powdery substance, but this “crack” probably is as addicting as that “crack”. One of the buyers brought it to an office potluck one day and it was pretty much gone in minutes, with everyone demanding for the recipe. The fact that the recipe is SO simple and easy really made us wonder if she was withholding some secret ingredients.
Ladies and gents, this really is one of the most delicious things we have ever had in our lives, and you are seriously missing out if you haven’t had one before. And trust us, you are going to be the rockstar of any party with these “cracks” in tow.
The ingredients? You can count them with one hand. Butter, chocolate chips, saltine crackers, brown sugar, and topping of your choice. (Detailed measurements at end of post.)
We used semi-sweet chocolate chips, but it is all up to you. Want it sweeter? Use milk chocolate. Fan of dark chocolates? Go for it! You can even use white chocolate, hershey’s bars, cookies n’ cream flavored… the possibility is endless. As for toppings, we used our Canadian favorite Coffee Crisps. If we had time for the grocery store we probably would use crushed almonds or pecans. And since it is close to holiday time, peppermint anyone? Again, whatever you want. Or you just don’t use any topping. This is the beauty of this recipe.
The process is as simple as the ingredients. Line the crackers up in a baking pan, with the salted side facing down. Melt butter and brown sugar until it comes to a boil, and pour the mixture evenly over the crackers. Bake the crackers in oven under 450F degrees for about 5 minutes. Pour the chocolate of your choice over the freshly baked cracker immediately after taking the pan out of the oven. You can either let it sit and melt a little bit, or put it back into the over for about a minute, then spread the melted chocolate over the crackers.
Once evenly spread out, you sprinkle your toppings over, let the pan cool down a bit, then refrigerate.
Once it’s hardened, you can break the chocolate toffee crackers into pieces. Big or small, again completely your choice. And YOU ARE DONE! Told ya, easy with a capital E.
We love to enjoy ours with a little glass of milk. Dip it in like Oreo cookies, sooo delicious and so addicting! It is hard to not go back for seconds, or thirds, or fourths…
